Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Public Attention

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a streaming series that examined his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing effort to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their status or wealth.
