Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
